Marina Nemat is the author of Prisoner of Tehran where she chronicles her harrowing experience as a prisoner in the famous Evin prison in Tehran. Marina was only 16 years old when she was arrested. She was tortured and came within minutes of being executed. Forced to marry her jailer, she spent several years under house arrest. After that husband died, she was released and now lives in Canada with her current husband and children. Marina tells with passion and clarity how writing her story saved her life, helped her to heal her trauma and become whole again. I interviewed Marina in 2008, and that audio is available as a free download on our site.

Join us on this special telesummit hour to listen to Marina tell us how writing her story helped to heal her, and what she has learned from these powerful techniques. (more…)

The power of story allows us to interpret experience in ways that potentially transform facts and events into meaningful insights. It is from the stories we make out of experience that we create the lives we lead and the people we are. Using her original model for identifying this pattern–The Spiral of Experience and Story–Christina will talk through the progression of story and integration and note at what points in the spiral people are most likely to write memoir, and how the point one is in the spiral influences memoir writing. The handout for this conversation is available at Christina’s website: www.storycatcher.net on the page: http://storycatcher.net/storycatcher_book.html, download the free PDF of The Spiral of Experience.

In this teleconference Dr. Lucia Capacchione will discuss the relevance of art, collage, and non-dominant hand writing and drawing in the context of a journal for memoirists. Tapping into rich stores of memories using right-brain techniques, which she originated, Lucia shares her unique applications of the latest brain research. Opening up emotions and visual/spatial impressions through spontaneous art and writing accesses the Inner Child and all the memories, which it holds. Writing from these areas of the right brain brings words to life and connects us with deeply felt heart re-collections. This healing and integrative process also opens us up to new parts of ourselves, and talents we thought were buried. (more…)
